With this in mind, a visit to Jose Alfredo’s house can almost be a religious experience. No one would deny that Mexicans have a strong sense of culture and national affinity, even when they are living outside of Mexico, and songs like those of Jose Alfredo are a universal bonding agent. Easy to see why Mexicans of all ages, and some foreigners, like his tunes. Most of his songs talk about his adventures with women and with the booze. He also drank a bit too much tequila, dying in 1973 at the ripe old age of 47 due to these excesses. Jose Alfredo apparently loved women, many of them and sometimes at the same time. Jose Alfredo Jimenez lived in this house until he was 11 years old, which is about the same time he started composing songs, more than 1000 throughout his lifetime which is not bad for a guy that didn’t play any instrument and apparently didn’t read or write music … although he was a great whistler.
